Participate in our research study and take up to three technology courses for free.

Dear UCalgary community,

We invite you to participate in a research study aimed at exploring the impact of digital upskilling initiatives at the University of Calgary. As part of our commitment to enhancing the learning experience through digital transformation, we are offering free Microsoft courses designed to improve your digital literacy and proficiency.

Why participate?

The adoption of digital tools — such as learning management systems, online collaboration platforms, and data analytics software — plays a crucial role in enhancing teaching and learning experiences. However, effectively using these tools requires a certain level of digital literacy, which includes critical thinking, problem-solving, and adaptability. This research aims to understand the demographic, prior technology experience, and motivational factors influencing participation in digital upskilling, as well as how these factors affect the application of newly acquired technology skills.

What the study involves

Participants will be enrolled in their chosen MS course section on a first-come, first-served basis through the UCalgary Continuing Education (ContEd) registration management system. To be eligible to participate, you must have a valid and active UCalgary email address.

What to expect...

  1. Pre-Course Questionnaire: Before the course begins, you will complete an online questionnaire that collects demographic data and assesses your initial perceptions of MS tools, along with your motivations for enrolling.
  2. Free MS Courses: You will have the opportunity to participate in an engaging, online hybrid MS course facilitated by certified instructors. The courses will feature a blend of self-paced materials, live discussions, and collaborative activities. Additionally, participants may have access to free certification exams for various Microsoft competencies.
  3. Post-Course Questionnaire: After completing the course, you will fill out a follow-up questionnaire to evaluate any changes in your perceptions and motivations, as well as your confidence in applying the newly acquired skills.

Both questionnaires will include open-ended questions to capture your personal experiences, challenges, and expected applications of the skills you learn.

Confidentiality

Your identity and responses will be kept confidential throughout the research process. Data will be anonymized and securely stored, ensuring your privacy is protected. We believe that this research will not only contribute to your personal and professional growth but will also help shape future digital upskilling initiatives at UCalgary.

If you have any questions regarding this research or would like to receive copies of the results upon completion, please feel free to reach out to Ewa Wasniewski at ewa.wasniewski@ucalgary.ca.
