Navigating labour relations issues can be challenging, but with the right tools and knowledge, HR professionals and leaders can effectively manage these situations. The Labour Relations Foundations Certificate equips you with essential skills and competencies to address labour-related challenges in both unionized and non-unionized environments.

Gain foundational knowledge in labour relations management, including negotiation processes, union-management relationships, labour legislation, and workplace policies. With hands-on application, you will also learn to handle grievance arbitration processes, draft collective bargaining agreements, and align actions with Canadian HR laws and regulations. Additionally, you'll obtain frameworks and tools to create productive workplace relationships, ensuring consistent application of agreements, policies, and legislation.

By completion of this program, successful students will be able to:

  • Recognize the transformational role of the human resource manager in a unionized environment
  • Identify the differences and similarities between managing a unionized and non-unionized environment
  • Explain the basic legal environment in which trade union's function, the process by which trade unions become legally entitled to represent workers, and the factors that motivate workers to become unionized
  • Describe the factors that influence workers to form or join trade unions and the political dynamics among employees, trade unions and employers
  • Describe the importance of having an equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility (EDIA) strategy to support an organization's objectives and priorities
  • Describe critical areas of human resource legal compliance within an organization
  • Apply different problem-solving methods, labour relations management models, documentation and artifacts required for successful project implementation to workplace disputes, such as the grievance arbitration process
  • Investigate organization's policies and initiatives for compliance around legal guidelines in the Canadian labour context
  • Recommend work policies that align with labour relations agreements, provincial and Canadian labour laws

You should plan on studying and working approximately 6 hours per week per course.

All Continuing Education programs are developed with part-time learners in mind. The Labour Relations Foundations Certificate is a 130-hour program.

The length of time it takes to complete this program varies by student. If you take one course per term (four courses a year), you will likely complete the program in 12 to 18 months. You will complete the program faster if you take multiple courses per term.

This program is offered in association with the Chartered Professionals in Human Resources of Alberta. Individuals already certified often take Continuing Education human resource courses to meet their continuing professional development (CPD) requirements.
