Course Description

Our advanced Adobe InDesign course is designed for learners who want to study how to create and design longer documents, master typography, and pagination tools and techniques, and create interactive forms and documents within InDesign. Explore tricks and shortcuts to help improve their production quality.

Students will learn how to become effective and efficient InDesign users by mastering layout and design techniques, and managing colours and images in publications for both print and digital.  

Course Details

Course assignments are application based; at the end of the course, you may be able to use some of this work to build your portfolio. The software used in this course is Adobe InDesign CC.

Course Learning Outcomes

By completion of this course, successful students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate advanced skills in effective page layout design 
  • Create long documents such as books and eBooks 
  • Design professional publications and graphics in InDesign 
  • Create digital documents such as interactive PDFs and forms 
  • Evaluate workflow and improve design productivity 
  • Integrate production power and creative freedom with Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat software

Prerequisites

There are no mandatory prerequisites for this course. However you are required to perform a self-assessment to ensure you meet the requirements to enrol.

Self-assessment for enrolment

  • A minimum of 6 months of work experience in Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator in producing high quality documents for digital and print media

Recommended pre-requisites:

ICT 578 Adobe InDesign

ICT 436 Adobe Photoshop

ICT 437 Adobe Illustrator

Classes are held online in real time (Mountain Time) at the specified time and dates.

You will require access to a computer with the required software, Internet connection, a headset with speakers and microphone, webcam, and a monitor large enough to display multiple applications (or the use of two monitors).

This course uses:

  • Desire2Learn (D2L), an online learning management system. The instructor will post your course outline and other materials in D2L.
  • Zoom web conferencing software.
  • Note: Students are required to purchase the Adobe Creative Cloud Apps (discounted price with ucalgary email) if they do not have access of the software. 

Students who are unfamiliar with online learning are recommended to take BMC 352 Learning Online prior to enrolling in this course.
