Course Description

You should be comfortable saying basic phrases and forming simple sentences in the present tense. Expand your knowledge of grammar and vocabulary, and learn more about the culture of the Spanish-speaking countries.

Course Details

By completion of this course, successful students will be able to:

  • Use vocabulary related to planning weekend activities
  • Talk about needs and preferences
  • Describe states of mind
  • Express ideas in future tense
  • Use vocabulary related to restaurants, menus, ordering meals and paying the bill
  • Compare people and things
  • Describe what the people are doing
  • Talk about the weather
  • Use vocabulary related to household chores, family relationship, and parts of a house
  • Ask questions and answer in short sentences

SPA 101 Spanish 1 or an equivalent level of fluency as determined by the department.

Students can choose from the following textbook options:

Option 1: "¿Cómo se dice...?" by Jarvis, Lebredo, Mena-Ayllón, 11th edition textbook bundle (includes textbook, student activities manual and premium website access with audio, video and other learning resources), ISBN: 1337596833. This option is highly recommended for students planning on continuing with higher levels of Spanish or wishing to pursue the certificate program, and will be used in courses up to Spanish 7.

Option 2: "¿Cômo se dice...?" by Jarvis, Lebredo, Mena-Ayllôn, 11th Custom Edition, ISBN: 0176842233. This custom text includes Lessons 1-6 and student manual pages for these lessons (but not audio or video resources). It is used for Spanish 1 and 2 courses only.
