RFR 101 - Ready for Research
Course Description
The Ready for Research micro-credential prepares students to confidently participate in research during their undergraduate studies. It consists of ten online modules covering key topics in undergraduate research. Participating in this micro-credential will help students discover undergraduate research opportunities on campus and create a plan to get involved, enriching their undergraduate experience.
Course Details
By the end of this micro-credential, learners will be able to:
- Understand the landscape of undergraduate research
- Define undergraduate research and describe diverse research pathways, opportunities, and funding options available at the University of Calgary. (Remember / Understand)
- Develop and refine research questions
- Apply creative and critical thinking strategies to generate and refine a clear, feasible research question. (Apply / Create)
- Apply foundational research skills
- Locate, evaluate, and manage scholarly and community-based sources using appropriate research tools and strategies. (Apply / Evaluate)
- Apply accurate citation practices to support academic integrity. (Apply)
- Demonstrate ethical and responsible research practice
- Explain core principles of research ethics and identify when ethical review is required. (Understand / Apply)
- Describe and apply ethical considerations in community-based and Indigenous research, including respect, reciprocity, and data governance principles. (Understand / Apply)
- Engage effectively with research communities
- Apply respectful and inclusive strategies for engaging with community partners and diverse knowledge systems; specifically Indigenous communities. (Apply)
- Communicate professionally with potential research supervisors and collaborators. (Apply)
- Navigate pathways into research participation
- Develop a plan to identify, pursue, and engage in undergraduate research opportunities. (Create)
- Analyze application processes and prepare key components of competitive research applications (e.g., studentships, proposals). (Analyze / Create)
- Reflect on personal and professional development in research
- Analyze personal interests, strengths, and goals in relation to research pathways and career opportunities. (Analyze)
- Develop strategies for building professional networks and next steps in research or research-informed careers. (Create)
This course was created with undergraduate students in mind, but graduate students are welcome to register. A graduate student version of the course is forthcoming. All students must register with their UCalgary email, otherwise they will be withdrawn.
