Why our instructors love teaching with Continuing Education...

Who are our learners?

UCalgary Continuing Education has been operating since 1965 and serves 20,000+ students per year, from local Calgarians to learners across Canada and worldwide. Many of our students take courses remotely from outside Alberta or are international students who come to Continuing Education to gain critical skills for the Canadian workforce.

Our students are working professionals and lifelong learners who are here to:

  • Upskill or reskill for new and evolving roles
  • Explore passions and build new competencies
  • Learn flexibly — online, in-person, or hybrid

Everyone has different goals and motivations, varying skill levels and unique personal circumstances.

They all have something in common: a desire to rise, to improve, and to make something more of their lives and careers.

What you'll teach

Our approach is to provide learner-centered, inclusive and experiential teaching for our students.

You'll teach non-credit courses in any of our 12 program areas.

Courses vary by program and portfolio, but typically:

  • Range from seven to 40 hours in total
  • May be graded or ungraded
  • Offered in-person, online asynchronous, online synchronous, or mixed formats
  • Average 20 to 30 students per class

Your role as an instructor

Give back to the community by sharing your knowledge. Your experiences and insights can help transform someone's lifelong learning journey.

As a Continuing Education instructor, you'll:

  • Design and deliver engaging, applied content
  • Facilitate learning using real-world scenarios and adult learning strategies
  • Manage communication, grading and student engagement
  • Collaborate with program managers and support teams
  • Apply Continuing Education adult learning standards in your teaching via our learning management system, Desire2Learn (D2L)
  • Have access to instructional support, tools and teaching professional development
