Course Description

Explore how settler colonialism continues to impact Indigenous people in Canada. Understand Indigenous resilience through their connection to the land, environment, culture, and spirituality. Students will engage in critical conversations and activities to further their understanding of intergenerational trauma, socio-cultural disparity, self-determination, governmental policy, and land claims. Take a deeper look into Indigenous movements, economic development, Indigenous rights and advocacy, and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the 94 Calls to Action.

Learning Outcomes

By completion of this course, successful students will be able to:

Give examples of the impacts and outcomes that the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the 94 Calls to Action have on Indigenous people
Recognize the connections between colonialism, power, and privilege, and the barriers Indigenous people continue to face and how this impacts their lives
Give examples of how contemporary Indigenous people are actively participating in political and cultural resurgence
Speak out about the current move toward reconciliation and its significance to Canadians
