WRI 417 - Beginning to Write a Novel
Course Description
Get started on the novel you want to write. Work on structure, characters, point of view, action, beginnings and endings. You will write a one-page outline and workshop the first 4000 words of a novel. Short assignments will help your characters begin to take shape, and a story to emerge.
This class is for anyone interested in taking your writing to the next level through feedback from peers and your instructor.
Course Details
By completion of this course, successful students will be able to:
- Recognize a novel as a genre distinct from other writing fields
- Apply the structural elements of a novel to their own written work
- Create an outline and write 4,000 words of a novel
- Recognize the importance of receiving constructive feedback on their writing
- Give constructive feedback on their peers’ writing

Carol Parchewsky, holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Queens University of Charlotte, a BSc in Mechanical Engineering from University of Saskatchewan, and Certificates in Professional Management-PEG, e-Learning, Creative Writing from University of Calgary. Carol is past president of The Writers’ Guild of Alberta. She was fiction co-editor for QU Literary Magazine. Carol has been publishing flash fiction, short stories, and poetry since 2017. Topics of classes and sessions she’s taught include writing, ESL, and project management. She also provides mentoring, editing, and copy writing services for fiction, journals, and organizations.
