KOR 101 - Korean 1
Course Description
This is an introductory course in spoken and written Korean, designed for students with no previous knowledge of the Korean language. Learn Korean alphabet (Hanguel) and develop basic communication skills through grammatical explanations, dialogues and vocabulary building exercises.
By the end of this course, successful students will be able to:
- Exchange greetings and farewells
- Introduce yourself and others
- Discuss likes and dislikes
- Count from 1 to 20
- Talk about your family
- Describe location of objects and places
- Have a better understanding of the Korean culture
Course Details
The course begins with learning the Korean alphabet (Hangeul) and goes on to develop basic communication skills through various units such as Greetings, Food, Shopping, Directions, and Family. The course focuses on helping students attain proficiency in all four language skill areas: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Attention is given to grammatical explanations and vocabulary building exercises. You will also be introduced to the basics of Korean culture.
I was born in Incheon, South Korea and immigrated to Canada in 2002. I studied English Literature and Communication Culture Information Technology at the University of Toronto, and Education at the University of Alberta. I also hold TESL certification from the University of Calgary. After graduating from the University of Alberta, I have been working as an educator at the Calgary Board of Education and the University of Calgary Continuing Education. I have been teaching languages for more than 11 years domestically and internationally. Some of my experiences include instructing and volunteer teaching ESL courses at The Immigrant Education Society, student teaching at The international School of Macao, teaching ESL students at private academies in Korea, and teaching Korean language to Korean-Canadian students and to the foreigners who were interested in Korean culture and language. I enjoy being a cultural and language diplomat, and I will do my best to introduce and enhance your experience with Korean language and culture at the University of Calgary.
