ART 323 - Abstract Painting
Course Description
Examine various forms of abstract painting through the study of painting techniques, colour theory, formal critique, concepts and ideas. Explore the history of abstract art and its relationship to design, interior design, photography and art theory. In addition, a visual vocabulary of abstraction will be identified and developed.

Course Learning Outcomes
By completion of this course, successful students will be able to:
- Identify the process of abstraction in painting in a variety of ways
- Explore the history of abstract art and painting
- Acquire a practical knowledge of abstract painting techniques i.e. hard-edge, expressionistic, abstract figuration etc.
- Describe the relationship of abstraction to art and design.
- Distinguish the relationship between colour theory and abstract painting
- Identify concepts related to practical colour mixing
- Formulate a vocabulary to describe abstraction in painting
- Create a personal abstract voice/style

Jesse Stilwell was born in Montreal, Quebec. He is an expert in colour theory and optical art. He received his BFA with distinction from the painting program at the Alberta College of Art + Design in 2012. He was a nominee for the 2012 BMO painting award. He has shown his artwork at the Marrion Nickel Gallery, Truck Gallery, Avalanche Gallery, Haight Gallery, The Art Gallery of Calgary, and the Norman Felix Gallery in Toronto. Stilwell’s paintings inhabit a variety of private collections throughout Canada. Articles about his artistic practice have appeared in Blend, FFWD and Beatroute magazines. His current studio practice is based in Calgary, Alberta. His approach to teaching is both community based and progressive. For Stilwell passionate teachers foster inventive and creative students.
