Course Description

The SECE Micro-credential program is fully funded for students who are Canadian Citizens, Permanent Residents or have Refuge status.  To apply for funding, please send an email to malcolm.lamb1@ucalgary.ca with your name and a copy of your Canadian birth certificate, passport, Canadian citizenship certificate, Permanent Resident Card, protected person status document (PPSD), or refugee travel document (issued by the government of Canada) for verification before registering. Please note funding is only available to 50 students per session. You will also be asked to complete a short survey as part of the application process.

Characterization is a significant part of developing, monitoring, and managing a reservoir and optimizing production. Explore characterization and evaluation methods that adapted from the petroleum industry can be used for the clean energy pathways (CEPs) subsurface evaluation. Different analyses may provide a more objective understanding of reservoir properties.

Learn how every method has its advantages and disadvantages, and how selective application of logging methods and data interpretation can deliver reasonable reservoir interpretation.

Course Details

By completion of this course, successful students will be able to:

  • Discuss the applicability of hydrocarbon industry training and skills to CEP evaluation
  • Describe and discuss how laboratory and well-log analysis methods can be used for CEP evaluation
  • Describe how rate-transient and pressure-transient analysis methods can be used to evaluate subsurface reservoir and hydraulic fracture properties for CEP evaluation
  • Discuss how drilling data analysis can complement log and core analysis
  • Provide some examples of how geochemical analysis of produced fluids can be used to constrain other subsurface characterization methods
  • Discuss how seismic and passive seismic methods can be used for CEP evaluation
  • Understand the basic theory behind each of these characterization methods
  • Provide specific examples of the application of these methods to CEP evaluation
