Course Description

Discover the science behind occupational illness and disease. The number of people affected by occupational related disease continues to increase. This course illuminates the science and art of occupational hygiene and covers its past, present and likely future. Topics include: toxicology, occupational health and safety standards, airborne hazards, indoor air quality, ventilation systems, skin diseases, industrial noise, radiation, lasers, thermal stress, and protective equipment.

Course Details

By completion of this course, successful students will be able to:

  • Describe the general history and scope of Occupational Hygiene
  • Explain the regulatory aspects of Occupational Hygiene
  • Conduct qualitative health risk assessments in the workplace
  • Describe the basic elements of toxicology as it related to worker exposure
  • Describe the main classes of health hazards and potential health effects
  • Explain workplace factors that contribute to worker exposure
  • Identify when quantitative exposure data are required
  • Describe the hierarchy of control methods used for health hazards
  • Describe the different types of respirators and the fit testing procedures
  • Demonstrate the occupational hygiene process as it applies to gases, vapours and solids (particulates), noise and vibration, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation (including lasers), thermal stress, biological hazards and indoor air quality.
