Course Description

Become aware of current classroom techniques that promote listening and speaking. Be introduced to the communicative method of second language learning through group discussion, modelling, games and activities. Then, discover how sounds are produced in a variety of languages and what practical teaching techniques you can use to correct common problems with pronunciation in a second language. Gain familiarity with the International Phonetic Alphabet.

Broad Learning Outcomes

By completion of this course, successful students will be able to:

  • Describe some common difficulties that adult learners face during speaking and listening tasks, and offer concrete solutions
  • Evaluate common types of listening and speaking tasks found in published material
  • Identify listening sub-skills and design tasks that focus on these in order to help develop learners’ overall listening skills
  • Design speaking tasks that maximize speaking opportunities and student involvement
  • Describe some of the key features of phonology
  • Analyze language structures and vocabulary items in order to identify what areas need addressing in the classroom

Supporting Learning Outcomes

By completion of this course, successful students will be able to:

  • Use terminology to discuss issues related to the principles of teaching listening and speaking, and pronunciation with peers and colleagues in the field of ESL
  • Describe in broad terms the listening process
  • Explain in broad terms how issues relating to accuracy and fluency affect speaking lesson design
