Course Description

This interactive virtual workshop, hosted by the Calgary Interprofessional Collaborative Education (CICE) Committee, will present a fictional patient case based on interprofessional practice in a healthcare setting and present interprofessional perspectives representing medicine, nursing, social work, and respiratory therapy on responding to a suspected tuberculosis (TB) patient case. This interprofessional practice education (IPE) workshop will simulate interprofessional healthcare collaboration and emphasize role clarity. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss the case with professionals and students who represent different professions. who are enrolled in health profession programs. Case material and discussion will focus on team communication and collaboration, role clarity, tuberculosis as a public health issue, healthcare processes, facets of patient care, and community resources to support TB patients.  

 

Course Details

Learning Objectives: 
- Explore the complementary and overlapping roles of different professions and resources in caring for a patient and their community. 
- Recognize when to consult/refer/include another profession in the team or resources that could be included to optimize patient outcomes.
- Practice collaboratively with an interprofessional team to meet the needs of the individual/family/community.  

Approximately 1 hour of advance preparation (reading/viewing) is required so that participants will have the pre-requisite knowledge needed to understand the case and participate in discussion. Advance preparation material and links will be sent to participants 1 week before the event.

Due to the event logistics, the number of spaces for social work participants (limits apply to each professional group) is limited to 30. Social work students and registered social workers from the community are welcome to register. 

Please note: Ensuring a quality learning experience for all participants and a balance of professional perspectives depends on registrants fulfilling their commitment to attend.

A certificate of participation for ACSW credits will be provided following completion of the workshop.

Please note, registrants should be available from 8:15 - 12:00, but will be randomly assigned to one of two sessions (8:15 -10:00 or 10:15 - 12:00).
