Richelle Nameth

Certificate for Emerging Leaders

"When you're in class, you may think you'll never have to use what you learn, but then, when it comes up at work, you think, 'I'm so lucky to have this knowledge'," says Richelle Nameth, a recent graduate of the Certificate for Emerging Leaders.

Richelle is a supervisor in a radiology clinic in Calgary. Her employer insists on training and development for staff in supervisory roles.

"The company likes to keep their supervisors on the same track, so everyone is expected to take the Continuing Education seminar, Fundamentals of Supervision," she explains. "Then you can choose for yourself what you'd like to do."

"I thought the University had the best program for me," says Richelle. "I liked that there were many options to choose from and that you could do it at your own pace. At first I wasn't sure how much of it I'd do, but I enjoyed the courses so much, I did the whole certificate."

It took Richelle approximately four years to complete her certificate requirements.

"The seminars taught me to be more self-aware, to see the importance of being professional, and to understand how my staff view that."

"You take much of the learning home too – communication skills especially," says Richelle, who is married and has two young children. "I know I use the skills I've learned every day."

Having enjoyed the learning experience, Richelle, who already has a degree in medical radiation from Australia, has decided to transfer some of her credits from the Certificate for Emerging Leaders toward Continuing Education's Professional Management Certificate. She plans to take advantage of intensive classes and do some evening courses as well.
