Kate Power
Human Resource Management Certificate
Kate Power had heard good things about the Human Resources Management Certificate when she began looking for opportunities to transition her career, so she enrolled in a few HR courses, just to see if the program was a good fit for her.
Kate is now a graduate of the program and has already begun looking at other Continuing Education certificate programs that could benefit her career.
Online courses were especially appealing to Kate, which contributed to her decision to choose University of Calgary Continuing Education."I worked my courses around my shifts," she says. "It was great."
"The level of engagement the instructors can create through online courses is really impressive. Some use videos and different kinds of assignments. You can email them and they'll help you out ... I really think online learning is fantastic."
Kate used her new knowledge in multiple jobs/roles and in her volunteer role as a career counsellor with Immigrant Services Calgary.
"The courses I took directly support the work I do," she says.
Kate also facilitated workshops and new employee orientation sessions, taking advantage of every opportunity to gain experience in human resources. She believes the volunteer experience and having the Human Resources Management Certificate helped her get a job in her field as a Talent Acquisition Coordinator.
"I think my certificate showed my employer that I'm serious about a transition to HR and demonstrated the knowledge base I have in the field." she says.
This was Kate's first time taking continuing education courses."I much prefer the Continuing Education experience as opposed to my undergrad experience," she says. "In these classes, whether it's online or in person, the instructors really value feedback and engagement. You hear from everyone, not just the expert, and it deepens the conversation."
Kate plans to continue taking Continuing Education courses in the future. "I'm going to keep going ... I think I'll take Change Management next."
