APP 355 - Indigenous Studies 30
Course Description
In this course, you will examine historical and contemporary experiences that impact Indigenous peoples in Canada. Exploring issues experienced by Indigenous peoples, you will be introduced to how rights and self-government function in local and international contexts.
Learn more about the importance of advancing reconciliation and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC) Calls to Action to begin addressing inequity, racism and discrimination towards Indigenous peoples in Alberta and Canada.
Course Details
By completion of this course, successful students will be able to:
- Discuss contemporary and historical issues encountered by Indigenous communities, and how Indigenous peoples have an inherent right to sovereignty, self-government and self-determination through reflections.
- Acknowledge Indigenous land claims, land rights, entitlements, and negotiations (historic and current) with the Government of Canada, and how this relates to Indigenous peoples and their relationship to the Land.
- Analyze impacts of colonization and colonial policies experienced by Indigenous peoples in Alberta and Canada with a focus on Truth and Reconciliation and the Calls to Action.
- Examine how Indigenous peoples around the world face common issues in their history, geography, politics, economics, education, and culture.
