The Conversations about Large Enrolment speaker series invites you to join in conversations with peers about teaching in large enrolment courses. Each session will have a guest presenter to share their experiences, engage in discussions and explore strategies for effective classroom teaching and learning.

From Classroom Practices to Campus Supports: Navigating Student Situations in Large Enrollment Classes

In large enrolment courses, instructors navigate requests from hundreds of students ranging from academic performance, deferred assessments, personal challenges, to classroom behaviour.

This session will provide practical classroom management strategies and supportive response techniques that instructors can use to address common student situations with confidence, maintain appropriate boundaries, support their own well-being, and connect students with specialized resources, including Student Accessibility Services and the Assessment and Care Team.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Apply effective classroom management strategies to address common challenging student situations in large enrolment courses.
  2. Distinguish between supportive instructional responses and formal academic accommodations, and understand the instructor's role in each.
  3. Identify self-care practices and professional boundaries that support instructor well-being when managing complex student situations.
  4. Recognize when a situation should be referred to specialized campus supports and select appropriate referral pathways.
