Preparing for a career in Canada

John Giray completed the one-year Project Management specialization of the International Professional Programs. John's background is rooted in government relations, business development, and international trade, areas in which he has over a decade of experience. Despite his extensive professional history, John felt the need for further growth, which led him to study at University of Calgary Continuing Education.

Canada has been generous to me in terms of new life experiences and wisdom.

His decision to relocate was driven by his aspiration to pursue a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) and to better understand the Canadian education system. While researching locations, Calgary was the natural choice. "Calgary is the third most livable city in the world," he remarked, noting how the city's calm nature and proximity to nature have positively impacted his mental health and overall well-being. "Canada has been generous to me in terms of new life experiences and wisdom," he reflected.

The program exceeded John's expectations in several ways. It not only provided him with the tools and techniques needed for project management but also offered courses in leadership, change management, and emotional intelligence. These courses helped him grasp the nuances of Canadian workplace culture and prepared him for his current role as an educator in Alberta. "The program was helpful in terms of allowing me to understand the Canadian education system," John noted. "Now, as an educator in Alberta, I was able to adopt the practices of the University of Calgary and bring them with me to support my adult learners."

One of the most appealing aspects of John's experience was the sense of community fostered by the program. "What I like most about the program is that we were built as a cohort," he shared. This cohort system created a strong bond among classmates, transforming them from peers into friends and even family. "We treat each other as family members because we're understanding one another... it helped us to see our collective goal of becoming successful eventually in the market," John said, highlighting the program's role in building a supportive network for newcomers in Calgary.

Preparedness is very important in embarking on a new journey, whether in your own market or in a new market like Canada.

For international students considering a similar path, John offers this advice: "Preparedness is very important in embarking on a new journey, whether in your own market or in a new market like Canada." He emphasizes the importance of mental, spiritual, and financial readiness, as well as the value of understanding and adapting to a new culture. For John, change is something to be embraced rather than feared. "Change is inevitable," he acknowledged. "But that change would allow you to get out of your comfort zone. And when you have learned to understand the process of going through change, that's when you're able to see the beauty of the process."

Looking to the future, John sees himself continuing as a lifelong learner. "Right now, as an instructor, I just enjoy being with my learners and supporting them in their growth," he said. As he continues his journey in Calgary, he carries with him not just the knowledge and skills from his program, but also a renewed sense of purpose and a deep appreciation for the process of growth and change.
