When Sheila Wong and her husband decided to build a new home, Sheila found herself involved in every aspect of the project from consultations with architects through to the final finishing details.
"Being so immersed in the process made me realize that this was something I wanted to do," says Sheila. "My husband was very encouraging about me going back to school, so I began researching programs."
Sheila discovered the Certificate in Visual Design specializing in Interior Design, and was especially pleased to find that the courses were offered in the evening. An at-home mom to three children, Sheila, who had earned a teaching degree years before, knew she was up to the learning challenge, and felt that with the support of her husband, she would be able to fit the program into her life.
As it turned out, she completed all of the certificate requirements in just 18 months - faster than might normally be recommended.
"I was motivated to get through the courses because I wanted to be able to apply my new knowledge during the construction of my house," she says.
"I liked the interior design program right from the start and I was always happy to go to class," she says. "The instructors were so inspiring and motivating. The classes were made up of a wide range of people - some people already working in the field in some way."
As she neared the end of her program, Sheila was quick to take steps toward establishing her own interior design business. When choosing her options, she had included courses that focused on setting up a business and how to promote and sell yourself.
"I would certainly recommend the program to others, and already have to my sister and a friend," she says, adding that both of them are now enrolled in the certificate.
"I'm very glad I took the program. It has really expanded my knowledge and allowed me to make some excellent connections."
Her business is getting off the ground. So far, she has found most of her clients through family and professional connections.
Looking ahead to her future, she says, "I can see myself coordinating the interior design and decoration of many houses in the future and I look forward to working with builders, architects and other home professionals in the field. I'm excited about it all."
