"Because I enjoy learning new things, I was happy to fit these courses into my life," says Mylan Nguyen, a recent graduate of the Certificate in Professional Writing specializing in Business and Technical Writing.
"I have always enjoyed writing and creating documents, so I decided I would enrol in the Professional Writing program. Now that I've completed it, I feel more confident writing documents of any sort."
University of Calgary alumnus, Mylan has both a Bachelor of Science Degree and a Bachelor of Education. She also has a teaching second language credential and has worked as an English-as-a-second-language instructor. Currently, she works as a language assessor for a non-profit organization helping new immigrants get established in the community.
"What I learned in this program has definitely been useful in my work. Because of it I've become a stronger and more efficient writer.
"It really was a boot camp," she says of the 200-hour program that she managed to complete in under one year. "It was tough, but you come out of it leaner and meaner."
This program was Mylan's first online education experience. A positive experience, it has led her to seek out another online program with UCalgary - a graduate studies program in education. "It was a good experience for me," she says. "Now I know what online learning is like and how beneficial it can be."
"I love lifelong learning," she says. "You never know where your learning will take you."
