Carllie Necker

Certificate in Adult Learning specializing in Career and Academic Advising

For more than a decade, Carllie Necker has been a dedicated Continuing Education student. In fact, the job she enjoys today as a cooperative education coordinator at the University of Calgary is the result of a successful practicum she completed as part of her Career Development Certificate program in 2005.

Her newest milestone is her recent graduation from the Certificate in Adult Learning specializing in Career and Academic Counselling, an accomplishment that has helped her gain acceptance to the Master's of Education Work and Learning program offered through the Werklund School of Education.

Carllie's Adult Learning Certificate program was her first experience with online learning. "Going in, I didn't know what to expect. But, I quickly got the hang of online learning and really enjoyed it. I had to learn how to manage my time, to make sure I could meet the requirements of my program and still maintain balance in my life."

A busy person by nature, Carllie works full-time and has a demanding family life. Managing course work on top of everything can be challenging, but she's quick to point out that she has had the benefit of a very supportive network both at home and at work.

"I reserved my evenings and weekends for my classes, but took some breaks along the way. It's important to give yourself a breather once in a while, and take time to refresh."

"The content in this program was very good," says Carllie. "And since it's all about adult learning, it was especially interesting to see how the instructors applied the concepts to their teaching."

Carllie was equally pleased with the instruction in her courses. "My instructors were fantastic, always very encouraging. I was really happy with all of them, and I can say I learned something different from each of them."

Being able to apply her learning to her work has been exciting for Carllie. "I've definitely received value from my certificate that I applied in my work... and in turn, I found that very motivating."
