Biniam Yemane
Certificate in Relational Databases
When Biniam Yemane immigrated from Ethiopia to Canada in 2003, he was already equipped with a bachelor's degree in commerce. A man who loves to learn, he chose to continue his education and pursued a Masters in Information Technology Management from the University of Calgary.
After completing his master's program, he landed a technical analyst position with Alberta Health Services in Calgary. But once he was working in the field, he felt the need for some additional, more focused learning. He returned to the University of Calgary, but this time, he chose to take IT courses through Continuing Education, and specifically, the Certificate in Relational Databases.
"Even though I had some background in databases, I didn't know the roots. I knew I needed to learn more," says Biniam. "I went to my first class, and came away with a wonderful impression of Continuing Education, thanks to an excellent instructor."
"All of my instructors were amazing," he says. "They shared their many experiences-both ethical and practical. It was great. I was able to take their experiences and mesh them with my own. All of the teaching was excellent."
In just a year, Biniam had completed the Certificate in Relational Databases.
"Continuing Education built my confidence tremendously. Now, I can work with people who have much more experience in databases than I do. Thanks to this program, now we speak the same language."
Biniam believes his certificate program has proved a worthwhile investment of his time. "I believe my certificate has really amplified my career...opportunities are coming because of it."
Despite having having completed his certificate, Biniam expects to be back in Continuing Education for more courses.
"I will never stop taking courses. I like being in school. The new learning keeps me alert... and keeps me going," he says.
