April Robinson

Human Resource Management Certificate

"I came into Continuing Education with some apprehension because I'd been out of school a long time. But what a fun experience it's turned out to be," says April Robinson, a recent graduate of the Human Resource Management Certificate.

April and her young son moved west from the Maritimes almost 19 years ago, and settled in Calgary five years later. As April's son got older and more independent, she decided it was time to fit education into her life. Having worked in retail, she had some experience with hiring and training, and decided she would like to pursue a certificate program in human resources. She completed her certificate requirements in approximately two years doing one or two courses each session.

April continues to enjoy taking courses and knows she will keep coming back for more. She plans to transfer some credits from her Human Resource Management Certificate toward a second certificate, likely the Public Relations Management Certificate.

For now, just for fun, she is taking courses toward the Certificate in French Language and Culture – FSL Foundations: "Being from New Brunswick, I've always known a little French, now I'm learning how to speak it more proficiently."

April is pleased that she persevered though the nervousness she felt when she first enrolled: "Really, the hardest part for me was walking through the door that first day," she says. "Once you start, the variety of people in Continuing Education really motivates you, and there's always someone who can help if you're having problems."

For people who may be feeling that same hesitation, April offers this advice: "Don't worry, just three hours in the classroom and you'll feel good about being there."
