When Richard Galambos, an electronic technologist working in UCalgary's Electrical Engineering Department, began taking courses through Continuing Education in 2008, he was doing it primarily for fun and personal interest, but that soon evolved into more.
Since enrolling in his first course, Richard has graduated from three certificate programs and established a small business. His certificates include Graphic Design, Professional Writing specializing in Business and Technical Writing, and Professional Writing specializing in Marketing and Public Relations. He recently began working towards another certificate, this time in adult learning.
"I almost exclusively enrol in online courses because they are easy to integrate into a hectic schedule," says the father of three busy children.
"I believe that because of my courses, I've become a better communicator," says Richard. "I've had opportunities to use my new skills at work and at home."
Richard uses his graphic design and writing skills to help his wife, who works as a consultant, by assisting with her website and promotional materials. In addition - although not originally in his plans - Richard has established a small sideline business for himself as a technical writer and editor.
After adding his new credentials to his LinkedIn profile, he was approached by a firm from the UK looking for someone to write technical articles. He began writing on a regular basis for them and has developed a similar relationship with a company in the Netherlands.
"What I've learned since starting these programs is that technical writers are really in demand right now," he says.
Richard also edits and proofreads for some of the students at the University.
"They sometimes need someone to look at their thesis," he says. "I'm able to understand the technology and can help with the writing. Sometimes English is their second language and they just need a little help smoothing things out."
Richard is appreciative of the instructors who taught him.
"They were all very professional," he says. "They were very knowledgeable and approachable and answered all of my questions right away."
