Course Description

Work-integrated learning is a form of curricular experiential education that formally integrates a student’s academic studies with quality experiences within a workplace or practice setting. WIL experiences include an engaged partnership of at least: an academic institution, a host organization, and a student. WIL can occur at the course or program level and includes the development of student learning objectives and outcomes related to employability, agency, knowledge and skill mobility and life-long learning.” (CEWIL Canada, 2023)

Before embarking on your exciting WIL co-op or practicum opportunities, you will be participating in a compulsory orientation to help you to succeed in Canadian workplace culture. Over the course of your co-op or practicum, you will connect with a Work-Integrated Learning Facilitator to submit interim and final reflections and reports to summarize the skills and knowledge gained from your co-op or practicum.

Course Details:

By the completion of the Work-Integrated Learning course, IPP students will be able to:

  • Adapt to the culture and norms of Canadian workplaces and contribute to a professional work environment
  • Reflect on skills and experience gained during the co-op or practicum within the submission of interim and final reports
  • Construct an effective LinkedIn profile to best highlight capabilities

Methods of Instruction:

  • Two-hour mandatory IPP Work-Integrated Learning orientation to understand the expectations of student conduct from a co-op or practicum.
  • Interim report and LinkedIn profile set up - This is a three-page double spaced reflection-based summary regarding students’ co-op or practicum experience at the midway point. In the summary, students will need to include new technical and soft skills they have learned, what they have learned about the Canadian workplace culture, and what they hope to accomplish in the remainder of the co-op or practicum. As one of the exercises, students will need to set up their LinkedIn profiles. Students will set up their LinkedIn profile after the course orientation.
  • Final report - This is a four-page double spaced reflection-based summary of students’ co-op or practicum experience. In this report, students reflect on what they have learned from their co-op or practicum, how the experience has shaped their career path, what they are most proud of accomplishing in their placement, and how this placement has impacted them professionally and personally.
