Course Description

Build a foundation or improve your drawing of the human figure in a fun and supportive environment. This workshop is ideal for beginners, as well as those who have previous experience in drawing the human body and portraits. Study from live models and receive immediate feedback from a professional artist.

Learn to apply fundamental concepts and techniques with charcoal, pencil, conté, chalk pastels, or any other drawing medium.

Course Details

By completion of this course, successful students will be able to:

  3. Draw portraits
  4. Draw different body parts

Classes are held online in real time (Mountain Time) at the specified time and dates.

This course uses:

  • Desire2Learn (D2L), an online learning management system. The instructor will post the course outline and other materials in D2L.
  • Zoom web conferencing software.

To fully participate in the live sessions, students will need: an internet connection, a reliable headset with microphone and a webcam.

Unless notified, all online courses are available at 9 am MT the day before the start date. Students registering on (or after) the start date will receive access within one day of registration.

Students unfamiliar with online learning are encouraged to take our free Digital Skills for Learning Online course.

Unless otherwise stated, notice of withdrawal or transfer from a course must be received at least seven calendar days prior to the start date of the course.

Supply List:

Sketchbook no smaller than 8.5" x 11". Inexpensive options: UCalgary bookstore, Dollar Store, Walmart or Michaels

Artist Sketch clipboard 23" x 26" (optional)

Drawing materials

Any of the following choices:

  • Black drawing pencil
  • Compressed Charcoal Sticks (conte’) Black, White and Brown
  • Chalk Pastels (colour)
  • Oil Pastels
  • Watercolour Pencils
  • Coloured pencils

The UCalgary bookstore or Michaels often has sales. Mona Lisa Art Supplies also sometimes has sales.


If using charcoal, conte or chalk pastels:

  • 2x Fabiano (Tiziano) paper brown, green or grey

If using black or coloured pencil:

  • 2x Mayfair paper (or any other white paper for drawing)

Note: Drawing papers are found only at Art stores or UCalgary bookstore

Other supplies:

  • Eraser
  • Workable Fixative Spray
  • An apron or other drawing outfit
