Course Description

This session will review initiatives implemented and learnings from the last five years of the Campus Mental Health Strategy’s Teaching and Learning Subcommittee. Of particular focus will be strategies developed over the last year during COVID-19 in response to student feedback that can be implemented inside and outside the classroom to benefit student wellbeing and learning.

Key successes and strategies will be shared such as the embedded certificate and course design for mental health resources. We also discuss the opportunities and challenges of addressing mental health and wellbeing post pandemic.

By the end of this session, you will:

  • Review strategies implemented and lessons learned from the last five years of the Campus Mental Health Strategy’s teaching and learning subcommittee.
  • Gain insight into strategies and learnings in mental wellbeing and resilience during COVID-19.
  • Review strategies to support mental health and wellbeing in post-secondary education such as embedded certificates and student support and course design strategies

Presenters: 

Dr. Melissa A. Boyce, PhD. Melissa is Associate Dean (Undergraduate Programs and Student Affairs) in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada. She is also Chair of the Teaching and Learning Subcommittee of the Campus Mental Health Strategy and Academic Coordinator of the Embedded Certificate in Mental Wellbeing and Resilience. Her research interests include collaborative learning, student engagement, and student wellbeing.

Dr. Natasha Kenny, PhD. Natasha is Senior Director at the Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning. She has a broad and interdisciplinary academic background that includes a Bachelor of Environmental Science, a Master of Landscape Architecture, and a PhD in Land Resource Science from the University of Guelph. Natasha has strong interests in educational leadership, workplace well-being in academic contexts, and the scholarship of teaching and learning and educational development. She also maintains disciplinary research interests in bioclimatic urban design and outdoor thermal comfort.
