Course Description

In this session we will give a brief overview of the role culture plays within our learning environments; a recognition of cultural dimensions can help improve the sense of belonging for our students, faculty, and staff. This session includes discussions around common concerns that may arise in our learning environments. Participants will have an opportunity to engage in group activities that will help you unpack the complexity of navigating different cultural dimensions. After sharing different perspectives on the role culture plays on our campus, participants will be provided with a pedagogical model they may implement to help foster a more inclusive learning environment.

Upon completion of this course participants will be able to: 

• Understand how cultural competency has the potential to impact students' and educators' sense of belonging in our campus community
• Recognize the impact that cultural competency (or lack thereof) has in your learning environment, and how a sense of belonging plays a vital role in creating inclusive spaces on our campus
• Incorporate cultural capacity building in your teaching practice with some practical suggestions and teaching strategies
