Course Description

One common area of concern for faculty and staff regarding the implementation of experiential learning (EL) and in turn, critical reflection, is the question of assessment. In this session, participants will be introduced to the basics of authentic assessment, and how it can be used to discern depth of student learning as well as provide constructive feedback that when integrated by students can improve future performance. Participants will review critical reflection rubrics and will be encouraged to think about how they would assess critical reflection for current and future EL activities.

  • Understand the concept of authentic assessment and its relevance to experiential learning initiatives.
  • Explore the role of authentic assessment in discerning the depth of student learning and providing constructive feedback to enhance future performance.
  • Review critical reflection rubrics and other assessment tools to gain familiarity with effective methods for assessing critical reflection in experiential learning activities.
  • Develop a critical reflection rubric that assesses a reflection assignment associated with the participants'’ courses or programs.
