A native Latin American Spanish speaker, Roberto Ayala has called Canada home for the last thirty-four years. Having lived in Guatemala City, Mexico City, Belize City, Miami, New York, Toronto, Quebec and Calgary has given him a good understanding of Central and North American cultures and languages. Also, living and travelling throughout the United States has helped him to be acquainted with the many linguistic variations of Latin American Spanish and with these an appreciation of their cultures and traditions. Roberto speaks fluent Spanish, English, French, Italian, and modern Greek.
Roberto holds a double BA in French and Spanish and an MA in Spanish, specializing in sociolinguistics and Iberian Spanish. Currently, he is a PhD candidate working on linguistics and romance language, focusing on Golden Century’s Spanish literature (Cervantes, Lope de Vega, Francisco Quevedo). For the last ten years, Roberto has worked as a French and Spanish instructor teaching credit and non-credit courses.
During his years of teaching practice, Roberto has learned to appreciate a good working relationship with his students. He encourages class participation and independent work so that students can enjoy the rewards and joys of actively speaking the target language. He believes that an instructor should respect the student’s opinion and be sincerely interested in the enhancement of the student’s language skill.
