Course Description

Global learning experiences like travel programs, virtual or hybrid programs, and COIL are often rooted in experiential learning (EL), which positions students to learn by doing. The EL Cycle helps explain how students learn through experiential learning opportunities and a deeper understanding of the EL process can help instructors design course elements like assignments, assessment and learning objectives. Participants will be asked to consider how the EL Cycle might impact their planning of global learning experiences. This session will also include a brief overview of critical reflection and the DEAL model as it relates to the EL Cycle. This is workshop one in a series of four. For fulsome understanding of global learning, and how to embed it in your courses, it is highly recommended that you register for all four sessions. You can register for each session on the TI course calendar.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Review and come to understand the EL Cycle and it’s four main components
  • Examined the EL Cycle in light of one or two EL activities related to their global learning experience
  • Examined the importance of critical reflection in assessing how students process the global learning or EL activity

Please note: Registration will close 48 hours before each workshop. Participants will receive relevant Zoom information via email at least 1 hour before the designated start time.
