Course Description

Neurodiversity acknowledges the natural variations in neurocognitive functioning among individuals. While many people think, learn, and communicate in similar ways, neurodivergent individuals experience these processes differently. However, neurodiversity does not exist in isolation—it intersects with other aspects of identity, such as race, gender, disability, and socioeconomic status, shaping students’ experiences in the classroom in complex ways. Understanding these intersections is crucial for fostering truly inclusive learning environments.

This interactive workshop will explore how neurodiversity and other social identities intersect to impact student learning, engagement, and success in postsecondary education. We will discuss common challenges faced by neurodivergent students, examine how intersectionality influences learning experiences, and explore evidence-based strategies to create accessible, equitable, and engaging classrooms.

Through discussions and hands-on activities, participants will reflect on their teaching practices and gain practical tools to support diverse learners. This workshop is open to all teaching staff, including staff members in supporting roles i.e. Teaching Assistants, who are looking to enhance inclusivity in their courses. We will be conducting the in-person workshop. By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize how neurodiversity intersects with other social identities, impacting learning in the classroom
  • Identify barriers that neurodivergent students with intersecting identities may face
  • Apply evidence-based strategies to create more inclusive and accessible learning environments
  • Develop actionable steps to foster a more equitable educational experience for all students

Delivery: This course will take place in-person at TI 250 in the Taylor Institute building on March 18, 2025, from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm.
