WRI 426 - Writing Romance and Erotica
Course Description

From cozy meet-cute to steamy and salacious, romance and erotic fiction explores complex relationships, motivation, love, passion, and attraction. We’ll explore the major concepts and themes of romance and erotic fiction, discussing questions of character and plot development. Whether you’re looking to develop a full-length story or thinking about ways to write stronger and more believable relationships between characters, this course will take your passion for writing in a new direction.
Course Details
Learning outcomes
By completion of this course, successful students will be able to:
- Describe the elements of romance and erotic writing
- Apply structural elements of plot to romantic/erotic scenes and stories
- Discuss themes and trends in these genres
- Identify various commercial and non-commercial avenues for publication
Course topics:
- Tropes and themes common to romance and erotica
- Discussion of ethical writing in a trauma-informed, consent-based classroom environment, as well as issues and trends in romance-based writing
- Writing dedicated romance/erotica versus including aspects in other genres
- Concepts of language, metaphor and simile, and symbolism in romance and erotica
- Giving and receiving feedback with peers
Notes
Note: this course will involve adult themes. Students will not be required to describe graphic scenes or write sexual scenes but should be aware that topics of discussion may include aspects of sensuality and sexuality. The instructor is committed to a safer spaces approach that welcomes and supports diversity and inclusion.
Prerequisites
This is not an introductory writing course and does not have prerequisites. It is recommended you take WRI 140 Creative Writing Exploration before enrolling in this course.
