Course Description

Neurodiversity encompasses the natural variations in neurocognitive functioning among individuals. While most people think, learn, and communicate in similar ways, neurodivergent individuals exhibit differences in these areas, often diverging from societal norms. Planning for and valuing these differences is crucial for fostering inclusive educational environments. This workshop will explore the concept of neurodiversity and its implications for postsecondary education, emphasizing how Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles can enhance inclusivity and effectiveness.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a set of principles that can guide educational decisions to make the learning experience more effective and inclusive for all learners. In this session, we will examine the three UDL principles and discuss ways in which they can be enacted in a postsecondary context. We will then discuss how UDL principles can be incorporated into courses that are not only effective for neurodivergent students but also strengthen the learning experience for all.

Participants will have the opportunity to share how they design neuro-inclusive courses and explore new ideas with others. This workshop is for anyone who is in a teaching role. We will be conducting the workshop in person. By the end of the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Better understand neurodiversity in the postsecondary classroom
  • Give examples of how UDL principles can be applied in the postsecondary classroom
  • Identify three UDL strategies to foster effective learning for neurodivergent students

Please note: Registration will close 2 business days before each workshop. Participants will receive relevant Zoom information via email at least 1 hour before the designated start time.
