Course Description

What led to the rise of civilization? Why did cities appear in some parts of the world and not in others? This survey course compares the similarities and differences between the world's first civilizations in Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, China, Mexico and Andean South America, and addresses the question: Why do civilizations collapse?

Upon successful completion of the course, you will be able to:

  • Describe the similarities and differences between the world’s first civilizations
  • Identify the reasons for the rise of civilization in each case
  • Discuss the processes involved in the collapse of civilization
  • Reflect upon the waxing and waning of civilizations and the place of our civilization in its trajectory
