Course Description

Fundamental principles of composition, functional relationships of spaces, finishing materials, and furniture and fixture selection are discussed and supported by a field trip. We will look at current and historical interior design trends as well as the basics of reading interior spaces from drawings and photographs. The design principles taught rely mainly on residential examples.

Course Learning Outcomes

By completion of the course, successful students will be able to:

  • Define fundamental terminology and key concepts of interior design and supporting disciplines
  • Identify the process of design work
  • Describe the differences between ‘interior design’ and ‘interior decoration’
  • Identify principle design considerations including: ergonomics, functionality, environmental and ethical concerns, and aesthetic composition principles
  • Apply the principle design concepts described above to your own projects as well as those viewed in publications
  • Read basic design drawings (plans, sections, elevations)
  • Apply interior design principles in selecting products, materials, colours, and lighting
  • Determine if a career in Interior Design suits you and start investigating further education options
