Course Description

What are the different Islamic sects and schools of thought? How should Muslims view the differences and disagreements that arise from such diversity? What about interfaith differences? What role does Islamic ethics play in mediating this religious diversity? This course will provide an introduction to Islamic ethics of disagreement, focusing on two areas: the ethics of disagreement among believers of the Islamic faith and the ethics of disagreement between them and those of other faiths.

Topics covered: Islamic ethics, how Islam views other religions, different Islamic schools of thought and Islamic sects, Holy war, jihad, terrorism

By completion of this course, successful students will be able to:

  • Develop a general awareness of Islamic ethics of disagreement
  • Recognize basic differences among Islamic schools of thought and sects
  • Define and compare widely used terms such as Jihad and Holy war
