Course Description

Become aware of current techniques used in the classroom that promote listening and speaking and be introduced to the communicative method of second language learning through group discussion, modelling, games and activities. Then, discover how sounds are produced in a variety of languages and how to correct common problems with pronunciation in a second language by learning practical classroom teaching techniques. Gain familiarity with the International Phonetic Alphabet.

Broad Learning Outcomes

By completion of this course, successful students will be able to:

  • Reflect on and understand the theoretical issues and principles that are related to teaching listening, speaking, and pronunciation in the field of IHL.
  • Appreciate the factors that might make listening and speaking difficult for learners.
  • Incorporate effective listening, speaking, and pronunciation teaching techniques into their own lesson and activities design.

Supporting Learning Outcomes

By completion of this course, successful students will be able to:

  • Use appropriate terminology related to the principles of teaching listening, speaking, and phonology.
  • Analyze listening, speaking, and pronunciation activities and evaluate their effectiveness for classroom use.
  • Describe in broad terms the listening process.
  • Explain in broad terms how issues relating to accuracy and fluency affect speaking lesson design.
  • Design speaking tasks that maximize speaking opportunities and student involvement.
  • Describe some of the key feature of phonology.
  • Discuss issues related to the principles of teaching listening, speaking, and phonology with colleagues in the field of IHL.
