Real estate development requires expertise in management, finance, engineering, urban planning, design, project management and architecture. The Real Estate Development Certificate incorporates all of these disciplines. As a student in this program, you will gain insight into the development process for various types of properties, including residential, commercial, and industrial. You will learn from instructors who are academics and professionals with extensive real-life experience in this demanding field. Their local perspective on real estate development will provide you with a realistic and practical understanding of the complexities of real estate development in Calgary and beyond.

The courses focus on principles, as well as the specialized knowledge and skills required on a daily basis in the world of development. Classes provide hands-on experience through real-world simulations, case studies, and projects that give you a true sense of the workplace. Many courses require participants to work on team projects. This approach to class work simulates projects and activities in the workplace, and provides each member of the team with the opportunity to take responsibility for a critical component of a major project.

Students come from a variety of fields including real estate development, banking, government, architecture, planning and engineering.

This certificate is perfect if you:

  • Work, or aspire to work, in the real estate development field
  • Work in a related field such as banking, government or architecture, and would like:
    • Insight into the development process
    • Local perspectives, and
    • Hands-on experience

Courses are delivered in the classroom and online.

All Continuing Education certificates have been developed with part-time learners in mind. The Real Estate Development Certificate is a 126-hour program. Students must complete 54 hours of core courses. The remaining 72 hours of credits will be chosen from a list of courses.

In general, most students complete the program in one to two years. Students who are keen to fast-track their program are encouraged to contact a student advisor to discuss their specific situation and options that may be available to them.

A degree or diploma is not required to enrol in this program.

You must be a minimum of 18 years of age to be admitted. Successful completion of a Grade 12 diploma and relevant work experience are recommended. If English is not your first language, please review the English language proficiency requirements.

You can take courses first and enrol in the certificate later; however, as programs are subject to change, we recommend you apply for admission to the certificate program as early as possible. The certificate admission fee is $105. Once you are admitted, you can be confident that you have locked in the requirements leading to your graduation.

Advanced standing may be granted for equivalent, graded courses completed at other post-secondary institutions. Credit may be granted up to a maximum of 36 hours towards this certificate.
