The roots of Remembrance Day are to acknowledge those who died in service during the Great War (1914-1918) — an era when the bodies of fallen soldiers were not repatriated. Each November 11th I am both cognizant and thankful my sons were not born one hundred years prior; our realities would be drastically different from what we enjoy today. 'Lest we forget' those who fell and they who mourned them.

These are my two grandfathers, pictured during their service in the military circa WWII.

Edward Baugh (colour photo) was my mom's father. He served with the Canadian Armed Forces as an Artilleryman. I have the compass he used to sight artillery during training exercises.

Norman Lawrence (black and white photo) was my dad's dad. He served overseas with the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps and then the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. He met and married my grandmother during his time serving in England.

My grandfather Fred Way (shown in the white shirt) was a bomber pilot with the RCAF 420 Snowy Owl Squadron. He was based in North Africa and took part in the invasion of Italy. One of his missions was flying cover during the battle of Salerno, where my husband's grandfather, Frank Wort, was taking part as an engineer in the British army. My grandfather was a passionate veteran and spent Novembers touring schools to share his war time experiences, hoping that we would never have to face another war like WWII again.

Cpl Mike Starker was killed during a foot patrol while serving in Afghanistan Tuesday May 6, 2008. We didn't know each other well, but had mutual friends growing up. I have always embraced Remembrance Day as a way to honour my grandfather, but Mike's death brought Remembrance Day forward in time for me, helping me connect the day to my own and future generations.

COVID-19 has adjusted my perspective towards Remembrance Day as well. This year, I will spend the day honouring my grandfather and all the service men and women who put themselves in harms way; but will also include a moment of gratitude for all our frontline medical workers — paramedics, doctors and nurses — who have worked so tirelessly to keep us all healthy.
