Beginning this year, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation will be observed on September 30 of each calendar year, with the first date being next September 30, 2021. The new holiday was proposed in 2015 by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). The TRC Call to Action #80 states:
"We call upon the federal government, in collaboration with Aboriginal peoples, to establish, as a statutory holiday, a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, to honour Survivors, their families, and communities, and ensure that public commemoration of the history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process."
In honour of this day, a cross-campus program is planned, and all faculties and units are invited to participate.
