Erin McIntosh
Human Resource Management Certificate
Erin McIntosh decided to take one core course in the Human Resource Management Certificate Program to see if she was interested in the HR field. It was enough to convince her to keep going.
So, when an HR position became available at the company where she was newly employed as a receptionist, Erin asked if she could move into the role and work towards an HR credential while she was in the job. They agreed.
"I was very lucky," says Erin. "Every day was a learning opportunity for me. I would go to class in the evening and apply what I'd learned at work the next day."
Erin moved through the program quickly, completing it in just 18 months – faster than is usually recommended by Continuing Education's student advisors who typically caution adult learners not to overload themselves.
Having completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and Women's Studies at Carleton University just a few years before, Erin was comfortable fast-tracking the program. She was impressed with the flexibility of the program and was confident she could make it fit into her life. She decided to take advantage of both learning options – classroom and online.
"Learning online was amazing," says Erin. It was new to me, but I found it very easy to navigate.
"And the classroom was excellent too. There was always a wide range of ages in class, both men and women, resulting in a great dynamic. We'd have intense conversations in the classroom – I enjoyed that, because I know that's how I learn best."
"Continuing Education is so customizable to your life. In the Human Resources program, there are a huge number of electives to choose from. I selected the ones that were most useful to me at work."
"The instructors were fantastic – always willing to help and give extensions if necessary. They understood that students were working too."
After completing the Continuing Education certificate, Erin has moved on to pursue the Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) designation as well.
"I'm really happy with what I'm doing. I believe I've found my niche," she says. "And, because of Continuing Education, I have that piece of paper that tells employers that I know what I'm talking about."
