HUM 198 Heresies and Heretics

Course Description

Inherited wisdom teaches that the early Christian community was quite uniform in its beliefs, claiming and conveying a true message from Jesus himself. Some modern scholars disagree. They say that contending beliefs were prevalent in the early church. Thus, some viewed Jesus as divine, not human. Others saw him as human, not divine. Early Christianity was replete with heresies and heretics – all claiming to represent Christ's message. Bart Ehrman's book, Lost Christianities, our key text, brings many conflicts into focus and separates fact from fiction. This exciting study will reveal that little has changed in 2,000 years.
