FIF 192 French Music and Culture at the Turn of the Century

Course Description

Explore the many musical trends that flourished at the turn of the 20th century in Paris. In the decades before and after 1900 competing 'isms' emerged, reflecting a wide variety of often overlapping ideologies. Nationalism, Wagnerism, impressionism, emerging neoclassicism, and other musical 'movements' coexisted alongside traditional styles and repertories.Cultural and aesthetic motivations for these artistic trends will be examined to contextualize significant musical works. Close readings of important musical works will be central to each class, including pieces by Debussy, Ravel, Chabrier, Fauré, Duparc, Massenet, Satie, and Poulenc.
