FIF 128 Polar Region Disasters

Course Description

Who besides John Franklin and Robert F. Scott perished in polar exploration? What happened to John Hornby in the Canadian barren lands? How did Charles Francis Hall die in the High Arctic? What happened to the Jeannette north of Siberia, the Endeavour in the South Atlantic, the Italia in the north Atlantic? Did Douglas Mawson survive falling in the crevasse in Antarctic? Did his companions? This course will examine these and other expeditions to Polar Regions, particularly since the nineteenth century, some of which ended in disaster, others which almost did.
