Read and discuss three novels and three short story collections of selected Irish writers. Along with an appreciation for these writers' skill in storytelling (one of Ireland's three great gifts, according to Irish myth), the class will explore some of the cultural and historical realities of Ireland.
The six books we'll discuss are by some of Ireland's best known and most respected writers:
Barry, Sebastian. A Long, Long Way. Penguin 978-0143035091
Johnston, Jennifer. The Gingerbread Woman. Headline 978-0747259336
Keegan, Claire. Walk the Blue Fields. Faber & Faber 978-0571233076
O'Brien, Edna. A Fanatic Heart. Farrar Straus Giroux 978-0374531096
Trevor, William. The Hill Bachelors. Vintage 978-0676973303
Wilson, Robert McLiam. Eureka Street. Random House 978-0749396725
The total amazon.ca price for these titles is approximately $90 and students will need to have the books available for reading and for class.
We'll start with Edna O'Brien, and the rest of the reading order will be established during the first class.
