PIW 118 Understanding and Assessing Your Health

Course Description

Enhancing your understanding of healthy outcomes based on your cholesterol profile, diet, physical activity and family tree is the goal of this course. The course will guide you through a systematic and thorough self-assessment of your health.  You will need to have a copy of your cholesterol profile and complete a dietary log and an online health risk appraisal questionnaire. Your personal health report will be the backbone of understanding and inspiring you to maximize your health priorities. Information on common health challenges faced by adults will be discussed.

Students are required to see their physician to obtain a requisition for a Fasting (10-12 hours) Cholesterol profile.  This blood draw will include: Total Cholesterol (TC), Triglycerides (TG), High Density Lipoprotein (HDL) and calculated Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL), and TC:HDL ratio.  There will be no charge to you for this profile.

Students must obtain a cholesterol profile (information in course notes above) from their doctor and complete a 3-day dietary record (PDF) prior to the first class.
