HUM 188 Zen and Classics of Buddhism

Course Description

This course will introduce students to the history of Buddhism, along with an introduction of classic Buddhist texts from the original Pali canon. Emphasis will be placed on the origin of Zen Buddhism, originally known as Ch'an in China. Beginning with the original context of Buddhism in India, we will analyze the transmission of Buddhism from India to China, where the Ch'an school developed. We will then focus on the development of Zen in Japan as inherited from the Ch'an school of China.
