Course Description

Learn about the unique relationship Indigenous peoples in Canada have with the land and environmental issues they face. Examine the effects of a contaminated environment on Indigenous cultures, diets and ceremonies. Review how Indigenous communities, industry and Canadian government jurisdictions address environmental concerns about Indigenous Traditional Territories. Discuss land management tools, including traditional land use studies, as methods of evaluating the current state of lands and the plans for future land use.

Course Details

By completion of this course, successful students will be able to:

  • Discuss the diversity of Indigenous people in Canada; their traditional lands, territories and Treaty areas.
  • Describe Indigenous peoples’ unique relationship with the land.
  • Identify environmental issues facing Indigenous communities now and in the future.
  • Describe methods of effective consultation with communities where environmental impacts may occur. 5. Describe land management tools available for land use planning in traditional territories.
  • Create an inclusive consultation plan for a resource development or conservation project.
